Balancing Voice with Professionalism

In the Public Relations Tactics class today, we'll discuss online profiles. The tricky part for professional communicators at any stage of their careers is how to speak with a real voice and stay relaxed with social media while also the avoiding pitfalls of mucking up your online presence. A couple of links for discussion:

Hey Professor Kelleher,

If you are going to talk about online profiles you should also mention to them keeping a professional looking profile picture across all their networks.

I've thought about this a little and your online profile picture is like a product being displayed in the store front window. People passing by will most often see your product through the window and make a decision on whether they want to come in or not. If they like what they see they come in. If not they walk right by.

Same goes with the profile picture. When people land on your various profiles online, one of the first things they look at is your profile picture. For students who want to be taken seriously, their profile picture needs to reflect that. A profile picture of you drunk, doing a keg stand, etc. will not leave a very positive first impression.

Btw, I would love to have taken this class again. Hope you keep blogging throughout the semester!

Take care.
